Language evolves hand in hand with society. Leading dictionary publishers, like Oxford and Merriam-Webster, continuously update their collections to include fresh words and expressions that reflect modern usage. This blog highlights ten newly introduced terms in Oxford Learner's Dictionaries for September.
1. Deep dive [noun] [informal] is a term that refers to a detailed examination of a subject.
The team conducted a deep dive into the customer feedback to identify key areas for improvement in the product.
2. Guesstimate [verb]: to attempt to calculate something based more on guessing than on information
We don't have the exact numbers yet, but based on the available data, I would guesstimate that our sales will increase by 15% next quarter.
3. Hyphenate [noun] [informal]: a person who is active in more than one area or profession, such as a writer-director or a singer-songwriter.
The entertainment industry is full of hyphenates who excel in multiple creative fields, such as singer-songwriter and actor-director combinations.
4. Idiopathic [adjective] [medical]: (of an illness) having no obvious cause
The patient was diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy, as the doctors could not determine the underlying cause of the seizures.
5. Juiced [adjective] [North American English] [informal] – Drunk
After a few too many cocktails at the party, he was completely juiced and barely able to walk straight.
6. Nurdle [noun]: a very small pellet of plastic that is used in the process of making plastic products.
Thousands of nurdles washed up on the beach after a shipping accident, posing a serious environmental threat to marine life.
7. Overfish [verb]: to take too many fish from the sea, a river, etc., so that the number of fish there becomes very low.
If we continue to overfish the oceans, many species could become endangered, disrupting the entire marine ecosystem.
8. Romance scam [noun]: the act of tricking somebody by pretending to be having a romantic relationship with them online in order to get money from them.
Jack fell victim to a romance scam after meeting someone online in a chat room.
9. Simp [noun] [North American English] [informal] [offensive]: a person you find silly or stupid
He constantly posts about her on social media, leading some to label him a simp for his obsessive admiration.
10. Unbox [verb]: to remove a new product from the material it is packed in.
I can’t wait to unbox my new smartphone and see all the features it has to offer.
